Quake III Arena is a multiplayer-based first person shooter released in 1999, close to the same time as the similarly-themed Unreal Tournament was released. Quake III was a departure from the past two games in the series but proved to be a success with its all-multiplayer focus--It took the best parts of the multiplayer modes of Quake and Quake II, tossed out the junk, and provided a solid, balanced experience. Bringing back characters from Quake, Quake II, and DOOM, and with mixing the futuristic themes of Quake II with the Gothic and Satanic themes of DOOM and Quake, id software created a masterpiece-of-an-amalgamation, and one of the longest lasting multiplayer first person shooters out there. While this game seems to conflict a bit with newer hardware (It is quite dodgy on my Radeon 4890), this game can now be played for free via Quake Live, a modified/updated version of Quake III played straight from your web browser.
