Starting on Mars in the Sol system can be difficult, but it's not as hopeless as it might seem at first. If you reequip your ship, you can start running goods between Sol and Barnard's Star. There are hardly any pirates in this region, and you can outrun them anyways. Sol wants mechanical stuff, and Barnard's Star wants food stuff. Generally, I'd recommend trading in expensive goods. Even if the profit is relatively small, there's a chance that you'll get to sell on an BBS for double the price. So, if you buy a unit for 1000, and it normally sells for 1020, and someone wants it for double the price, then your profit is (1020*2)-1000. It's a gamble though, you have to be quite certain that the commodity is in demand, or no one will offer to buy it at double the price. If you're not feeling lucky, you can buy both Computers and Robots when heading to Sol, and hope that at least one of them have a 2x offer.
